Title: Community Resource Public Service Announcements: Using Podcasts and Videocasts for Understanding the Role of Community Resources in Social Capital

Grade: College

Subject: Human Development (Psychology)

Background Info:

Many students and their families are unaware of the plethora of community resources that are available to them. In an effort to arm students with this information to improve conditions in and around their communities, students will create community resource public service announcements. In preparation for this work, students will have already have been introduced to Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theorywhich holds that interactions with others in different contexts are key to development. Students will have also already been introduced to the concept of social capital, the idea that social networks have value in the support and care they provide for the developing person.

Objectives:

Students will demonstrate understanding of social capital by
a. identifying a community resource;
b. reporting what services the resource provides under what parameters;
c. examining the relationships between resources presented by groups in the class; and
d. designing a mind/concept map for illustrating the relationships between those resources.

Activity Description:

Students will, following the model of a public service announcement, create a podcast or videocast that describes area community resources. Students will then present their podcast or videocast to their class peers, explaining their process and reasoning.

Student Directions:

Community resources are defined as public or private agencies, groups, schools, programs, etc. that provide services to people in a community to improve health and life.

Students will:
  • Complete the podcast/videocast and concept mapping parts of this lesson in groups of 5
  • Use a group wiki to collaborate outside of class in the planning, writing, producing and editing of the podcast/video
  • Choose their agencies and communicate that choice to the instructor (groups cannot choose the same resource)
  • Research their resources before conducting an on-site interview. The research can be through the resource's website, any recent community news related to that resource, via telephone conversations with representatives from the resource.
  • Conduct an on-site interview with a staff member of the community resource being researched
  • Create a podcast/video based on the interview and research
  • Edit their podcast/video
  • Publish their podcast/videocast on the course website
  • Present their podcast/videocast to the class, explaining how their resource fits the definition of social capital
  • Share on the class discussion board why they chose the agency they did, an insight they walked away with regarding how social capital in their community can affect individual development, and which other resource presented by a group caught their interest and why
  • Respond to three other classmates' posts
  • Create a mind/concept map to illustrate the relationships between the resources presented in class
  • As a culminating activity, students will plan a Community Resources Fair

The class will brainstorm the kind of information community members would want about this resource before conducting the interviews, e.g.:
  • Services provided
  • Location
  • Years in service
  • Any affiliations the agency has (e.g., the agency might be affiliated with a church, national organization, etc.)
  • Population served
  • Fees charged
  • How to access services
  • Number of staff
  • Whether there is typically a waiting list and how long the wait can be
  • References
  • Impact data

Students will find useful information on creating public service announcements on the Community Toolbox website that is generated through the University of Kansas.

Technology Needs for Podcast/Vodcasts:

Microphone, computer with Audacity software or MP3 software; digital video recorder; iTunes; TeacherTube; SchoolTube;

Assessment:

Students will be assessed on:

  • Their self assessment regarding their wiki contributions
  • Quality of research on community resources
  • Ability to use the selected technology (podcast or vodcast) effectively
  • Presentation skills (voice clarity, eye contact, etc) both on the podcast/vodcast and during the classroom presentation
